How to unlock any AT&T iPhone when beeing off-contract?

If your iPhone is locked to AT&T, potentially it can be unlocked with very little effort. Follow the steps below:

STEP 1: On your iPhone go to Settings > General > About and write down the IMEI number. Or dial *#06# on your iphone with no spaces to look up the imei number.

STEP 2: Go to AT&T’s online account support page, login with a valid AT&T ID, and click on “Technical Support” to start a chat with a live representative.

STEP 3: Ask them to unlock an off contract iPhone and provide the iPhone IMEI number.

STEP 4: Let the AT&T representative check if the iPhone is indeed without a contract and give them an email address when asked

If everything works out, the AT&T rep will provide you with a case number and an estimated date of completion for resolution. The date they provide is a rough estimate and by no means represents the date you will get an email from AT&T. Sometimes AT&T sends the unlock emails out within an hour but it can take up to 10 days as well, the time varies widely based on the volume of unlock requests.

UPDATE: Emailing AT&T doesn't work, they will ask you to log in to your AT&T online account and contact customer support. Also calling the support number may or may not help you with the unlock, but you can still try at 1-800-331-0500, if it doesn't work through the live chat system within your online account.
